Lussier and Achua refer to reward power as, “the user’s ability to influence others with something of value to them (Lussier)”. When I read this definition it reminded me of many situations I have been in over the years. When I was younger, my older brother would try to influence me with money to clean his room or to do his chores for him. It also reminded me of high school; teachers influence students to get good grades so they can have the opportunity to pass the class and earn scholarships. It almost seems like bribery to me. In the management position we go back to positive reinforcement, “a method of encouraging continued behavior offer attractive consequences (rewards) for desirable performance (Lussier)”. To influence others with positive reinforcement is appropriate to use incentives such as giving hard working employees badges, pins, jackets, pay raises, bonuses, promotions, etc. I experienced positive reinforcement by earning a pay raise and a promotion during my time working as a cheerleading coach, flexibility/strength and tumbling instructor. From the experience that I have had, positive reinforcement is a great tool for managers to use. Lussier and Achua explain that, “a leader’s power is strong or weak based on the ability to punish and reward followers (Lussier)”. I worked for a leader that had a strong ability to punish and reward their followers and I have also had a leader with weak ability to do so. A boss that I have had in the past had great ability to punish and reward their followers by giving or taking away rewards such as promotions and recognition. I witnessed my boss pull aside one of my former co-workers to tell them that their work ethic was not up to par and they would be moved back down to their previous bagger position if their behavior did not change. On the other hand, I REFLECTION JOURNAL !3 have had a boss let employees talk on their phone on the job, not wear appropriate attire to work, and continuously arrive late. In my opinion, this is an example of a leader with weak power. Reward power is an important aspect of leadership. It is a great tool to help influence behavior of followers and to continue productivity. I have learned a lot during my experiences of reward power and reading about it in chapter five. When/if I become a manager I will definitely implement these techniques to better my leadership skills.
