Compared to traditional construction methods, sustainable construction reduces the amount of fossil fuel-based energy that a building consumes, reduces the amounts of virgin materials incorporated into the construction, and incorporates the use of sustainable virgin materials.Sustainable construction means utilizing design elements that optimize energy resources, such as the use of passive solar energy which can provide heating and cooling to a building as well as daylighting naturally (Chel & Kaushik, 2018). This reduces a building’s use of energy from the grid, which is often created by burning natural gas or coal and contributes to greenhouse gases. Designing a building to incorporate passive solar energy is sustainable and avoids negative impacts to the environment because it does not create additional greenhouse gas emissions.In sustainable construction, the reuse of existing structures and the use of recycled materials contribute to less construction waste in landfills compared to traditional construction methods. Some recycled materials, such as the use of fly ash or coal bottom ash in mortar or recycled plastics and electronics in concrete aggregates further help to divert industrial bi-products and consumer waste from ending up in landfills.Finally, sustainable construction incorporates the use of virgin wood in a way that is sustainable. According to Ramage et al. (2017), dimensional lumber like Sitka spruce that is used for structural purposes is harvested every 35-45 years, although 80-year-old trees provide additional structural properties. Laminated veneer lumber (LVL), on the other hand, is made out of pieces of fast-growing trees, like poplar, that are not structural as dimensional lumber but become structural through the manufacturing process. These trees can be harvested every 7 or 8 years. Products like RigidLam LVL are both certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and apply to LEED credits in sustainable construction. Finally, some of the tools and equipment installed in green facilities are more complex than the non-green counterparts. As tools and equipment become more complex, it requires maintenance workers to have a higher level of training; therefore, it will require higher wages.One of the trends that may become more prevalent as time passes is the construction of prefabricated modular buildings (Alexander, 2021).
