The practicum sessions helped me to discover that exposure to real world application of learned leadership and nursing theory was the ideal approach for advancement of skills and knowledge. The practicum sessions helped me to recall course content as well as apply critical thinking to determine the most appropriate approach of applying knowledge and skills according to context. One of the activities I did during the practicum sessions was to chair a therapeutic session with the family members of a patient suffering from schizophrenia. As the family members brought their loved one to the mental health clinic, I noticed low moods, anxiety, sadness, and desperation evidently present among them. From the patient’s data regarding disease progression and the challenges the disease had brought on the family, I thought it wise to offer extensive guiding and counselling to the family to help them know how to handle their kin and help them towards healing. The family meeting helped me to gather that the family had endured many insults from neighbors due to the aggressive and noisy nature of the patient. I guided them on how to fight stigma, offer their patient support, and care to help them improve. I referred them to several support groups to help their patient and scheduled other family meetings to help guide the family throughout the period of disease progression. This experience helped me to display as well as build by competencies in communication and relationship building, professionalism, PRACTICUM REFLECTION 3 leadership, and knowledge in healthcare (Waxman et al., 2017). I demonstrated competency in communication and relationship building by developing trust and understanding with the family, as well as giving them hope. PRACTICUM REFLECTION 5 Week 6 Reflection During the past week, I developed and implemented two-day training and mentorship sessions to help three new staff members acquire skills on how to use the PHQ-9 tool to screen for depression among patients. For effective teaching, I developed a PowerPoint presentation for use when lecturing the trainees. I also exposed the trainees to online training resources to help them gain deeper insight on the use of PHQ-9 tool. We then conducted several role-play sessions to guide the trainees on best approaches when administering the test to patients. By the end of the training sessions, all three employees had gained exceptional skills on how to use the PHQ-9 tool. The activity was associated with several leadership traits including mentorship, selfawareness, influence, communication, courage, accountability, and respect. The core leadership competencies that were evident in the exercise include accountability, communication and relationship building, apply strategies to promote health and prevent illness, effective managerial and leadership skills, principles of quality improvement, safe working environment, and demonstration of understanding and knowledge. Apart from that, I also convened a staff meeting to address the issue of slow service delivery and delayed patient attendance. This was after collecting five complaint notes from the complaints box over a period of two weeks. In the meeting, I divided the staff members into PRACTICUM REFLECTION 6 three groups and formed focus groups. The groups helped in collecting data pertaining to the possible causes and solutions of the slowdown in delivery of services to patients, and delays in offering service to clients. The findings of the three focus groups revealed that there was need to increase the number of staff to meet patient needs as well as provision of digitized tools for use at the workplace. The experience helped me to display several leadership traits empathy, excellent communication, transparency, focus, commitment, risk-taking, accountability confidence, adaptability, and many others.
